Fall of aircraft traffic at Shannon

Shannon Airport has witnessed a dramatic fall in the commercial aircraft traffic in the previous month with a 56% drop from June 2009.

The Irish Aviation Authority from the recent records has disclosed that less than 1,100 aircraft passed through the county Clare facility during June.

During the first half of the year, there were 7,800 commercial flights at Shannon, a significant 6,480 less than the same period last year, representing a 45% decrease.

Shannon Airport Authority’s concern over the issue is natural as there appeared such a big decline in the aircraft traffic during the month of June as it was usually one of the busiest months of the year.

Ryanair’s decision to pull many of its flights to holiday destinations, fewer stopovers by US military aircraft and the loss of some transatlantic services are considered as the three main causative factors by the analysts.

It is not only Shannon which has suffered the loss of revenue in landing fees, but also other services at the airport were terribly hit equally.

During the same time, Cork also went down by almost 12% and Dublin by 15%.

For the period of January-June, Cork has replaced Shannon as the second busiest Irish airport after Dublin, with 11,423 commercial flights. Cork had 12,949 flights in the first six months of the last year.

From July onwards the numbers should be more encouraging as Aer Lingus through its subsidiary Aer Arann, have enlarged its number of flights to UK destinations from Shannon.
