Shannon: The Heart of Ireland

The name of the longest river in Ireland, “Shannon” came from “Sionna”, the name of a Goddess.  Beginning from a Mountain in County Cavan, the flowing water extends southwards and ends when it meets the Atlantic Ocean.

There are a lot of jaw-dropping sceneries at Shannon; these places are a sight to behold as you start your tour. From the magnificent beaches to the different counties, you will be awestruck as you visit the place of Burren with its fascinating flowers and animals up to the majestic Cliffs. Shannon is truly a place of natural beauty.

You can go cruising down the river or ride along its waterways. You can hike across the mountains or hop from one island to another at Aran Islands.

You can go cycling along its country roads that lead to seaside coves. You can go uphill or downhill within Country Clare. This place has been heralded as the “cyclist paradise”.

Just be sure to have the latest and updated road maps. Do not forget to check the weather updates. Bring extra food and water to prevent dehydration. Most importantly, remember to cycle on the left hand side of the road.

If you want to practice that swing after a long travel, why not putt in the greens of Shannon Golf club that was established in 1966 and was designed by John D Harris.

If you are the indoor type, you can try out the amenities at Shannon Leisure and Swimming centre.

Getting Around Shannon

It is never a problem going around as there are bus service operated by Bus Eirann, car hire, local taxi and rail services.

However, for the most in comfort and speed, nothing beats a car hire to make your trip memorable.
